When New York Times bestselling author Neal Stephenson first coined the term metaverse in his 1992 cyberpunk novel Snow Crash, he set a high bar for other science fiction authors to come, including the worlds subsequently created in films like The Matrix. His immersive literary technique and attention to detail in each of his works – Seveneves, Anthem, Reamde, and Cryptonomicon – have created a world that, today, we are actually working to build: this next-generation information era, dubbed Web3.Īs one of the most popular sci-fi books of all time, Snow Crash’s first inception was a graphic novel undertaken by Stephenson and artist Tony Sheeder in 1988 called Dioxin Posse. However, the publisher rejected its manuscript, as the printing costs were upwards of $20,000, forcing Stephenson to write Snow Crash as a novel.įast forward to 2023, and Stephenson’s vision of the metaverse is finally taking shape, where questions of identity and infrastructure are finally front and center. Jerome’s family struggled with poverty after his father made some bad investments in the local mining industry. Jerome had a brother who died at an early age, but he also had two sisters in Paulina and Bladina. His father was an iron monger and lay preacher, who also did architecture. His name was originally James Clapp Jerome as well, but he would later change his middle name to Klapka after the the exiled Hungarian general György Klapka. His dad really liked the name Jerome, apparently. His father would later rename himself to Jerome Clapp Jerome which lead to Jerome’s unique name. He was born as the fourth child of Marquerite Jones and Jerome Clapp. Jerome was born in 1859 in Caldmore, Walsall, England and he passed away in 1927 in Northampton. He is best known as the author of Three Men in a Boat, a comic travelogue, and Idle Thoughts of an Idle Fellow. Jerome was an English author who wrote many popular works in his time. Upon doing some research, I discovered that I was more familiar with the author than I first thought. I made sure to write the name down both for her and for myself. It was upon reading the back that I realized it wasn’t the first book (at the time we didn’t have a copy in stock). The cover had caught her attention and, to be honest, it caught mine too. I first found out about the book when a customer brought the second in the series, A Bad Deal for the Whole Galax y, through my line. Then go out and buy A Big Ship at the Edge of the Universe by Alex White, and then read it. Do you like stories that keep you on the edge of your seat? Do you like high stakes races, space battles, and grand conspiracies? Do you like stories that blur the lines between science fiction and fantasy in a way that feels new yet completely natural? Throughout his career, he’s won a MacArthur Fellowship, the National Book Award, and the Pulitzer Prize.
